Getting the school year mapped out...
Well, I think I've got next year figured out...at least it looks good on paper.
We follow the Well Trained Mind. It's a classical education focusing on "good" [living] books, classical literature and adding Latin this year.
Here's what we have in mind for John:
MATH - Saxon Level 3
GRAMMAR - Abeka Language Arts 3
WRITING - Writing Strands 2, continuing cursive writing
READING - continue to read those "good" books
HISTORY - Story of the World by Susan Wise Bauer, Book 3 [1600-1850]
SCIENCE - Apologia Astronomy
LATIN - Prima Latina
ART - Discovering Great Artists by Mary Kohl
SPANISH - taught by a mom who grew up in Chile
MUSIC - The Story of the Orchesta by Robert Levine
Plus, he'll still be involved with church, Cub Scouts [will be a Bear next year], tumbling and baseball.
Here's what's in store for Anne:
MATH - Saxon Level 2
GRAMMAR - Saxon Phonics 1
WRITING - Handwriting Without Tears
READING - continue to read those "good" books
HISTORY - Story of the World by Susan Wise Bauer, Book 3 [1600-1850]
SCIENCE - Apologia Astronomy
LATIN - Prima Latina
ART - Discovering Great Artists by Mary Kohl
SPANISH - taught by a mom who grew up in Chile
MUSIC - The Story of the Orchesta by Robert Levine
As for Anne, she'll be involved with church, American Heritage Girls [along the lines of the Girl Scouts], tumbling and, perhaps, a drama class [we're going to try one over the summer].
And for William:
We'll use Sonlight's Pre-K program, continue to read lots of books and play. He's also involved at church and LOVES tumbling. Of course, he can't wait to be a "real" Tiger Cub Scout [you have to wait until you're 6 years old].
Latin, Art, Spanish and Science will be taught in a co-op environment with about 4 other families. All the moms will help in some way and we'll meet once a week for about 4 hours.
I feel like I'm finally getting into the swing of things and enjoying the freedom that comes with homeschooling. We are typically "done" with school by noon, but education is a life-long, all-day process. We're always learning! One of the best things that has come about because of our decision to homeschool has been the interaction between the 3 kids. They really like each other! What a blessing!
More posts to come as I wrap up our year and share with you what we've been doing.
